Virginia's New Governor Creates History as First Female Governor

Over many decades, Virginia has seen seventy-four governors, all of them men. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger overcame this glass ceiling by being elected as the first female governor in Virginia's annals.

Centered Around Cost-of-Living Concerns and Targeted Criticism

Ex- US representative and CIA operative succeeded with a campaign that highlighted cost-of-living issues and deliberately targeted Donald Trump's policies instead of the individual.

Background and Academic Journey

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey on August 7, 1979, she moved to a Virginia community at age 13. Her dad was an military serviceman who subsequently pursued a career in law enforcement; her mom was a healthcare professional and volunteer.

She studied at the Virginia's flagship university, obtaining a degree in French studies. Upon completing her studies, she worked briefly as a classroom instructor before turning to a career in public service.

“I grew up knowing that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” Spanberger told followers at a gathering in coastal Virginia last Saturday.

Professional Path

At the federal agency, she worked cases involving narcotics, exploiters and money launderers. She executed court mandates, frequently being the only woman on the arrest team. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and focused on national security, working covertly and overseas.

Personal Crossroads

In that year, she and her husband Adam, an engineer, reached a career crossroads. Living on the Pacific coast, they were considering another overseas assignment. They took out a world map and inquired of their oldest child, then in elementary school, where they should go. the commonwealth, she answered, because “everyone we love lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we decided to pivot from a federal career, to service to community because she was correct. Those dear to us are in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in the commonwealth, she joined a grassroots group, which addresses firearm incidents, and started a youth group. In 2017, she resolved to campaign for the House, which advisers told her was a “impossible task” because the party hadn't had won the congressional seat in decades.

“But I saw what the president was doing with his authority and how he was dividing communities. And I noticed my member of Congress over and over again vote to repeal the healthcare law. And I knew I had to take action. So spoiler: I was victorious.”

Moderate Stance

In the capital, she rapidly became part of the centrist group, a alliance of centrist and budget-conscious lawmakers. She prioritized specific policies: bringing internet access to the countryside, combating drug trafficking and veterans’ services.

She quickly established a reputation for collaborating with Republicans and was often cited as the most bipartisan member of the state's congressmembers. She was vocal about messaging that she believed turned off moderate voters, warning her fellow Democrats against partisan language that could be used against them in tight races.

The "Mod Squad"

Along with Congresswomen Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was dubbed a part of the “centrist alliance” in contrast to the left-leaning “squad” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Gubernatorial Campaign

In late 2023, she declared she would step down for a another term and would rather seek the state's top office in 2025.

Her platform focused on ideas of civic duty, advocacy for schools and infrastructure and defense of democratic institutions. Her federal service gave her authority on defense issues and she described public service as a vocation rather than a job.

Win Over Opponent

This helped her to overcome rival candidate Winsome Earle-Sears’s attacks on cultural issues, including the claim that she is an extremist on individual freedoms and health care for transgender people.

The governor-elect, who stated that local school districts should determine whether transgender students can compete in competitive sports, portrayed her rival as the candidate more out of step with the center of the commonwealth's citizens.
