The Showrunner Shares He Knows How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series wrapping up—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team opened up about the fan response and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Audience Reaction
One could easily to get swayed by the constant speculation and online debates about Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it from others, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Has the creator Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren’t being guided by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
