The Grisly Animated Movie Ending That Haunts Audiences
Out of every mature animated films I have ever viewed, nothing has remained with me quite like the terror-laced finale of a viscerally violent and highly provocative film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, the Spanish writer-director created a dark, somber and often savage world that included a few small , desolate hints of optimism.
While Unicorn Wars seems like it originated from an impulse to expand animation further, the filmmaker clarified that it was more an attempt to communicate a global, cross-cultural message regarding “the mutual source of every conflict.”
That message is expressed by means of a group of vividly colored bears , openly modeled after a well-known line of cuddly figures.
Maturing in a culture focused on warmongering as well as the military-industrial complex, a lot of these creatures are consumed by killing the mythical beasts, thanks to a holy book which states the bears they were once rulers of the woodland, before the horned beings drove them out.
A few did not entirely fallen for the brainwashing, , would rather try out narcotics and mate outdoors.
In contrast to their cuddly counterparts, these vivid animals show sexual organs , definite urges.
For a particular particularly cruel, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the war with the unicorns turns into a route toward dominance — and especially to supremacy above his gentler, kinder brother the character Tubby.
Bluey behaves aggressively , an obvious sociopath , and as horror overcomes his unit and takes his comrades individually, he takes increasingly control for himself, through ever more bloody, destructive ways.
Simultaneously, the unicorns are experiencing their own nightmare, as a spreading, harmful creature in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it seems like a comedy,” the filmmaker stated. “However it turns into a more intense and sad movie. And in the finale, it’s a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars commences similar to among the whimsical films from a legendary animator, that uncover a wicked pleasure in allowing cartoon characters curse, fire weapons, or have intimate relations.
Afterward it becomes closer to a more grim film by that same artist, including ever more visual gore , a tangible connection to the real horror of battle.
By the end, it’s a full-on extreme drama massacre.
The horror which makes this a Halloween-friendly movie starts well before than that description suggests.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the hardcore fans of gore, for lovers of intense movies who desire to view something they’ve never watched previously, and can endure a narrative that pulls absolutely no punches.
See it with the lights off free from interruptions, and that ending will dig deep within you and take up residence there.
