The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
At least 16 lives perished and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.
The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
