The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Explains Its Implementation of AI Tools for New Divinity
The team behind hit titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its upcoming project, sparking significant hype within the gaming community. However, recent comments from the company's co-founder have brought clarity to the conversation, touching on the developer's approach toward AI tools.
Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs
In a latest message, Larian's director outlined that the company is employing machine learning for specific supporting functions. These encompass developing pitch decks, creating initial concept art, and writing draft dialogue.
Importantly, Vincke stressed that the final assets in the game will be crafted solely by actual artists. "Our team is developing every line manually," he affirmed.
Our studio is continuously expanding our team of concept artists and are actively forming narrative groups.
As visual development is being particularly called out — we currently have over twenty concept artists and have job openings for additional talent.
Everything we do is incremental and aimed at letting our team spend more time on actual creation.
Any AI system applied correctly is supplementary to a artist's routine, not a substitute for their skill.
Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent
The revelation of using AI initially sparked backlash among portions of the player base. In reply, Vincke issued further elaboration on social media.
"We use AI tools to research ideas, similar to we use the internet and physical media," he wrote. "During the initial ideation stages we use it as a basic framework for layout which we then replace with hand-crafted artwork."
He added, "We've hired talent for their creative vision, not for their willingness to replicate what a machine suggests."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had in the past detailed the company's practical method to this technology, defining its use into three main pillars:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: Areas like motion capture cleaning, audio processing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adapting animations for different models.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using systems to rapidly prototype rough mock-ups of scenarios to test concepts ahead of expensive production.
- Long-Term Aspirations: Exploring how AI could eventually enhance emergent player agency, especially in managing dynamic reactions in a vast role-playing world.
He clearly affirmed that central narrative disciplines — like visual art — are are in no way departments where the studio is replacing artistic involvement. In fact, Larian is expanding its staff in these exact fields.
"Our studio is not releasing a game with AI-generated content, nor looking at cutting staff to swap them out with AI," Vincke summarized.
