Senegal's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the space, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of until after the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Year and Continental Arrival

This move put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and earning best player.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

At Monaco, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
