New Year Celebrants Told to Wrap Up Warm with Wintry Weather Expected Across the UK
Weather experts are reporting a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall expected over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Alerts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be essential," noted the weather service.
Fireworks Under Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and clear skies. The mercury are forecast to be cold, making extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.
To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Widespread Advisories for Friday
Moving into Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Readings Set to Drop Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Health Advisories Issued
Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency stated this meant the weather was likely to trigger notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a potential rise in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
