Italy's Consumer Group Slams Lift Ticket Cost Increases as Totally Unreasonable
A leading Italian consumer association are raising alarms over what they describe as entirely unreasonable cost hikes for ski passes this winter season, warning that alpine sports could become a luxury reserved for the wealthy.
Substantial Price Increases Across Italy
Across the Alpine regions and stunning Dolomite mountains in the northern areas to the slopes of Abruzzo, prices are set to rise by up to 40% compared to 2021 levels, according to recent analysis.
The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now cost skiers €86 per day during the current winter. In Roccaraso, a daily ski pass is projected to hit €60, following significant overcrowding during the previous winter.
Seasonal Pass Costs and Additional Expenses
Meanwhile, annual skiing tickets will range from €755 per adult in Roccaraso to as much as €1,800 in the Aosta valley.
The expense of hiring winter sports gear has also increased, along with hotel accommodations and restaurant prices throughout alpine destinations.
Watchdog Leader Points to Unreasonable Hikes
The consumer association president, heading the watchdog organization, emphasized that the cost rises—which operators blame on increased utility expenses, facility upkeep, and requests for superior gear—were completely unjustified and unacceptable.
"Particularly since inflation in Italy are managed effectively and utility costs, which had increased expenses for ski resort operators in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," he explained.
He added that prices have climbed to points where budget-conscious visitors are being forced to abandon their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, completely.
Tourism Decline and Wider Perspective
Melluso observed a sharp decline in mountain tourism during the current winter period, with a million fewer domestic visitors visiting ski resorts compared to the previous year due to increasing expenses.
Even with these hikes, Italy remains a more affordable destination for skiing enthusiasts in western Europe compared to nearby Swiss resorts, France, and Austrian locations.
International Event Background
The growing concern over winter sports expenses comes as the nation gets ready to host the 2026 Winter Games between the first three weeks of February. Italy's foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, announced on Friday that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations urging a "global truce" during the global competition.
"Through the Winter Games we must also send a message of peace and conversation... to halt conflicts during the Games," he declared.
