We are verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
