Democrats Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and declared they should be arrested and punished "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Recording That Triggered the Controversy
The video footage, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who previously acted in military or security capacities.
"As we did, you all made an vow to safeguard and support this national charter," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "Currently, the dangers to our governing document don't only come from abroad, but from right here at home. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline unlawful commands, you have to refuse unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that break the law or our founding principles."
The Former President's Furious Response
The clip appeared to prompt a heated reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump published on his social media platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their statements cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials Respond
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a joint declaration denouncing the comments.
"Political violence has no position in the United States," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all served our country with tremendous patriotism and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the security of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged online messages and withdraw his dangerous language before he leads to violence," the statement added.
Lawmakers' Defiant Reaction
The representatives who appeared in the video also released a declaration.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who care for this United States and took an vow to protect and support the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No intimidation, intimidation, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president views it liable to punishment by execution for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they fulfill their vow to the constitution and obligation to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must unite and condemn the former president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Further Governmental Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and published on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is requesting the death of public representatives."
He added: "This is an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this immediately and unconditionally."
The GOP leader supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very harmful, you have leading members of the government instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that's historic in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to examine the wording and establish all that."
Administration Response
During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "You have active officials of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a video message to individuals of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to defy the president's lawful orders."
She said: "The integrity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that system is broken, it can cause people getting killed, it can lead to chaos, and that's what these members of Congress ... are basically promoting."
