Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
